Local 1775 Leadership Attends IAFF Convention in Cincinnati

Seven Local 1775 leaders are currently attnding the 52nd biennial convention of the IAFF in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Attending as Delegates are President Bob Briare, Secretary Todd Lando, and Shop Steward John Bagala (MRW).  Shop Stewards Mario Bernardini, Jr (NOV), Geoff Larkin (NOV), and Mike Tribolet (MRN) are attending as Alternate Delegates.  Political Director Ken Martin (SNR) is attending as a guest.

Delegates to the convention will vote on nearly 40 resolutions, affecting issues such as the rebuilding of the National Fallen Firefighter Memorial in Colorado Springs, potential per-capita increases to fund new and existing programs, and a variety of critical labor issues affecting firefighters nationwide.

pizzas iaffPallets of Pizza Delivered to Sequestered Delegates
When a vote on a per-capita increase became contentious today, a "roll-call" vote was required.  All 2050 delegates were required to remain on the convention floor and individually cast votes for all represented IAFF members.  As the meeting ran several hours longer than planned and could not break for lunch, hundreds of pizzas were delivered on pallets by Local 48 (Cincinnati Firefighters).

IAFF Convention Starts With Inspirational Opening Ceremony
The opening session of the IAFF 52nd Convention paid tribute to the thousands of members who have embraced the IAFF journey, “riding the rigs, entering burning buildings, attacking wildfires or getting a pulse back on a child.” Read more …

Resolution Recognizes Late Jay Johnson’s Continuing Service
Throughout his career, Jay Johnson was a strong advocate for education, particularly in the area of hazardous materials training.  During his 12 years on the San Mateo, CA Local 2400 Executive Board, Johnson served as secretary, vice president and district representative. And upon his passing, he bequeathed the majority of his estate to the W.H. “Howie” McClennan Scholarship Fund. Read more …

New Cincinnati Local 48 Members Sworn In at Convention
In a powerful testament to the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant program, Cincinnati Local 48 President Matt Alter brought a few special guests to Convention… 50 of them, in fact. The 50 men and women are Cincinnati’s newest fire fighters, hired thanks to an $8 million SAFER grant. General President Harold Schaitberger swore all of them in as IAFF members during the Monday Business Session. Read more …

Welcome Delegates
Thousands of delegates from across the United States and Canada are registered for the IAFF 2014 Convention to make important decisions about the future path for this union. Convention officially kicks off Monday, July 14 with the Opening Ceremony, which includes the State of the Union address from General President Harold Schaitberger.
