L1775 Sponsored Charity Hockey Game May 9

Esteemed Colleagues,

My name is Thomas Moran and I am a Firefighter at Southern Marin Fire Protection District, and a member of IAFF Local 1775 Marin Professional Firefighters.  I am the co-founder of the Northbay Guns N Hoses Hockey Club, where our mission is to provide financial help to a local member of our public safety community.  We accomplish this by fielding a team of firefighters from Local 1775 (Marin), Local 1415 (Petaluma), and Local 1401 (Santa Rosa) to play a local police team in an annual September 11th charity hockey game.  Through ticket, raffle, and concession sales we have raised over $20,000 in the past three years.

In February, we received the heartbreaking news that the daughter of a firefighter from Local 55 (Oakland) was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer and would be facing a long and expensive battle this year.  Taking a chance, we asked Oakland Firefighter Jim Halpin if his department's hockey team would be interested in a charity game to raise funds to help offset the medical costs for this brave little girl and her family.

A veteran of six years worth of fundraising through the sport of hockey, Firefighter Halpin immediately called me back  Within 36 hours we had rosters, donated ice time, and were well on our way to gathering support from the Bay Area fire community.  Our initial fundraising goal was $5,000, however we have already surpassed that.  Our new goal is $20,000 and we are confident that by pooling our resources, the hard work of multiple Northern California Locals will combine to help out a child in need.  The Brothers and Sisters of Vacaville Fire are providing personnel and equipment the day of the game to help with event logistics, and we will be interviewed by KTVU News during our practice session in Vacaville on April 22, from 9-11 AM.

I am writing to you to ask that you help spread the word of our event, and that we would appreciate your support through attending our game.  Any type of posting, calendar submission, or word of mouth discussion is appreciated.  Executive Board members from all of our locals will be in attendance, and we anticipate 600 fans to cheer us on and partake in the raffle and silent auction.  100% of the proceeds will go directly to the family of the firefighter.  I have attached a flyer and solicitation letter with the specifics for our event at Vacaville Ice Sports on May 9th.

Please do not hesitate to contact me for additional information.

Sincerely,

Thomas Moran
